15 Things From the 1950s That Have Completely Disappeared

The 1950s was a very different time. Life was slower, simpler and less connected in the 1950s than it is today. No smartphones, no Internet, no social media. There are many things which were common in the fifties which have totally vanished. Those who have lived through the ’50s might still recall them vividly. The one thing that was common in the 1950s was the milkman. In many areas milk was sent directly to the front door. The milkman came early in the morning and left glass bottles outside the house.

The empty bottles were returned to the families for re-use. This was a regular occurrence in the 1950s. For most people now, it’s just a matter of going to the supermarket and purchasing a bottle of milk. In the 1950s there were also tons of telephone booths. If not at home, people would use public phones. They had coins with them in order to make a call. There was no means of sending a fast text message in the 1950s. When you wanted to talk to someone you had to locate a telephone. In today’s day and age, there are hardly any phone booths left remaining.

The other item from the fifties was the typewriter. Typewriters were used to write letters and documents in offices, schools and homes. There was a significant challenge in rectifying errors made. The delete button is something you couldn’t press like today. Care had to be taken in typing in the 1950s. Typewriter was gradually phased out by computer, and rarely used now. There were also lots of little local shops in the 1950’s. The owner of the business was typically known. They purchased bread, candy, newspapers and other basic items. Shopping was a more personal experience in the ‘50s. There was no shopping mall or online shopping.

The 1950’s were also the era of drive-in theaters. Families and young couples came to the big outdoor screen in their vehicles. They viewed movies in the car. The drive-in movie theatres were extremely popular in the 1950s. It was only a few of them that remain active today. Soda fountains were also a part of the 1950s in drug stores. A counter was where individuals stood to order ice cream, milkshakes and soft drinks. It was a place where teenagers met up with friends after school. These were significant social centres in the 1950s. In the present day, there are very few old-fashioned soda fountains available.

Maps were also crucial in the 1950s, as they were printed on paper. Drivers had large maps in their car and used them for planning trips. The people had no GPS to indicate where to turn. Getting lost was much easier in the 1950s. There were a lot of strange things that happened in the 1950s. The days of delivering milk, having calls made at a phone booth, using a typewriter, and selling pop at a soda shop were all normal days. Although the 1950s might be over, these recollections help to remind us how much life has evolved over the years.
