Life on the Arizona frontier was a struggle. There were a lot of groups who wanted the land. The area had been inhabited by native peoples for an extremely long time. Later, the Spanish settlers, Mexican leaders and American settlers came to the area. The goals were unique for each group. This led to fear, a conflict, and years of violence. Arizona land was barren and rugged. The water was scarce and travelling was difficult. In the circumstances, life on the frontier was not easy and reliable.

Native nations were strongly attached to the land. They were independent, with their own customs, chiefs and lives. When more settlers came, the Native communities were deprived of land and water. They were also disrupted in their hunting grounds and traveling routes. Many Native people objected because they were concerned about their families and their lifestyle. There were numerous difficulties that confronted settlers as well. They feared attack, robbery, starvation and loneliness. The frontier was also hard to keep in check due to the border. Arizona was near Mexico; folks migrated throughout the area for work, trade, and safety. There were different cultures and laws along the borderlands. This sometimes led to misunderstandings and conflict between local, soldiers, officials and settlers.
