With an old woman there can be a number of memories in her heart. Some memories comfort us, some of them are painful. She can recall people that are not there anymore. Even when grandma doesn’t say a word, she is asking for kindness with her smile. It requires patience. It seeks respect. It pleads for someone to peer through her eyes and see into her heart. She doesn’t always require a lot of large items. She needs to be appreciated. She will need to feel loved. The life she has to live is still important, and she needs to know it. All the old women should be treated gently and honestly. That her smile doesn’t mean that her pain should be ignored. Once we know both we give her the respect and love that she deserves.
