Arizona is rich and long in its history. This land was inhabited thousands of years ago. The first inhabitants found the ways to survive in the hot and arid climate. They constructed houses, cultivated crops, hunted animals, and located water sources. They established good communities and their own traditions, languages and lives. There were numerous Native American communities in the state of Arizona. Many others were in these groups, such as the Hopi, the Navajo, and the Apache. They were spread throughout the land.

Arizona History

The area was explored by the Spanish in the 1500s. They were from Mexico, looking for land, wealth and new paths to travel. Religious authorities from Spain also came into the area. They established missions and attempted to educate native American peoples in their beliefs. The Spanish exercised rule over it for several centuries, however, most of the territory continued to be inhabited by Native Americans. Mexico became independent from Spain in 1821. With this change, Arizona was added to Mexico.

The United States acquired a vast amount of territory from Mexico in 1848 as a result of a war. The area of present-day Arizona was ceded to the United States. In 1854 additional land was added. Arizona had been a part of the New Mexico Territory at first. The U.S. established the Arizona Territory in 1863. During the territorial period, there was an increase in the number of settlers who migrated to Arizona. They came for the purpose of finding gold, silver, copper and other minerals. There was also the development of farming and the raising of cattle.

On February 14, 1912, Arizona became the 48th state of the United States. Alaska and Hawaii were the last two states to be added to the nation. Since statehood, Arizona has continued to expand. New roads, school and homes were constructed, and new businesses were started. Water projects were built to supply water to farms and towns. Many people migrated to Arizona in the 1900’s due to the warm climate and prosperous economy. Phoenix and Tucson grew more and more in size.

The state was developed by tourism, agriculture, mining and manufacturing. There were also numerous jobs generated by military bases and new industries. Arizona is recognized today for its deserts, mountains, Native American cultures, and flourishing cities. It has a history of many people and cultures. The state’s land, traditions, and communities have been influenced by the past. Arizona’s history is an important part of the history of the American Southwest.
