20 Things Every 1970s Kid Will Remember

Growing up in the 1970s was very different from growing up today. There were no smart-phones, no Internet, no video calls. Children spent more time outside, played simple games and enjoyed the little things. Life was slow and yet very fun. These small details are well remembered by many of those that are still in their childhood from the 1970s. There is one aspect of the 1970’s that every 70’s kid can recall that is hours of play time outside. Bicycles, tag, rope jumping, and running around the neighborhood were enjoyed by the kids.

It was common for parents to say that it was time to go home before dark. No phones were available to call to see where the children were. Children just went outside, looked for their friends and had fun. Venturing to television was also a significant aspect of childhood. The shows were limited and families tended to watch them together. Saturday mornings were reserved for cartoons, and children were excited about them. They were to wait until their favorite show aired. No pause or skip or there was no way to watch it later. So if you weren’t able to see it, you were stuck waiting for its next airing.

Music was very important too. Children heard music on the radio, record players or tape recorders. Children enjoyed listening to their favorite records and playing them repeatedly. It was exciting, though took time, to make a tape of favorite songs. One could not find any song in a few seconds like today. School life too was simple. Kids used pencils, notebooks, rulers and chalkboards. Most classrooms were lacking in tablets and computers. The teachers drew a lesson on the board and then the students copied it in their notes.

Many other memories are also recalled through toys from the ’70s. Children enjoyed playing with dolls, toy cars, building blocks, yo-yos and simple board games. There was no need for screens for fun. A cardboard box can be a car, a house or a spaceship. It was the best toy a child could have had: imagination. Other good recollections are family vacations. People weren’t using GPS in their cars.GPS wasn’t used by car. Paper maps were used for navigation by parents. In the back, children were seated, gazing out the window and playing games. Long travel was sometimes tedious but sometimes very special family experiences.

Snacks were easy, too. Children relished candies, ice lollies, chips, homemade sandwiches and sugary drinks. It was kind of fun to go to the little store with a little money in your pocket. It seems like a bygone era nowadays, but there are a lot of people today who fondly recall the ’70s. Children enjoyed less technology, but had a lot of fun, imagination and freedom. Those days were so simple for many 70’s children that they had created a memory for them that is still special today.
